High-altitude sprinkler at the fruit forest in Hai Tan village, Nhu Thanh commune.
Originally from Hoang Thanh commune, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu's family relocated to the mountainous commune of Nhu Thanh under the new economic development migration policy decades ago. With the hard-working nature of coastal people, she and her family have continuously improved the wild hills and developed a sustainable economy in their second homeland. When Hai Long commune (old) was chosen as a mountainous area for model new rural development, the government at that time encouraged her family to build a modern economic model in the direction of green - clean - beautiful - effective, applying scientific and technical advances to production according to the model garden criteria of a model new rural commune.
Since 2017, her family has been determined to invest in and renovate the mixed garden, planting a forest of Dien grapefruit, then jackfruit, green-skin grapefruit... In addition to residential land and perennial trees, her family has bid for a 50-year hill area, increasing the total land area of the entire economic model to 45,500 square meters. Up to now, her family has 300 milk fruit trees, 800 Dien grapefruit trees, 200 green-skin grapefruit trees, 400 jackfruit trees, many coconuts and other crops, all of which are yielding fruit.
Leading visitors to the model, Ms. Thu introduced the modern high-altitude sprinkler irrigation system, which had been invested in hundreds of millions of dong. As proof of the right investment, she went to the technical box at the beginning of the garden, just pressing a button, the entire 3.5ha grapefruit and star apple forest was soaked like a shower after about 5 minutes. According to her, the water source is taken from a fish pond hundreds of meters away, when operating, it is led up the hill by a high-capacity electric pump system, creating pressure and spraying through a system of 13 rotating nozzles above. The fruit trees here are also planted in scientific rows, based on technical advice from agricultural experts and learning from her experiences in many places.
“Determining that reputation and product quality are vital factors in modern agricultural development, I have chosen to cultivate in a completely organic direction. Every year, hundreds of tons of decomposed manure from large farms are imported, which is the main source of nutrients for plants. Sufficient irrigation water and organic nutrients are also the reason why grapefruit and sapodilla here are very sweet and juicy. At the end of each crop, there are traders from inside and outside the province who bring trucks to the garden to buy and import to supply chains in many provinces and cities across the country,” Ms. Thu shared. The clean cultivation process also helps grapefruit products of the model to be recognized as meeting VietGAP standards, becoming a “passport” for agricultural products of Nhu Thanh commune to reach further.
Along with developing modern fruit forests, her family invested billions of dong in renting machines to dig ponds, with a total area of up to 1.6 hectares to store water all year round. The main fish raised here are grass carp, fed on banana leaves, cassava leaves and grass in the garden, which are completely free. Around the pond, rows of coconut trees cast shade, creating a poetic scene and providing additional income. According to Ms. Thu, the fish pond alone brings in a profit of about 100 million dong each year.
The total investment capital for building production infrastructure and investing in seedlings, and related expenses of the model has reached nearly 2 billion VND. However, in the past 3 years, her family has also had a profit of about 1 billion VND each year, having completed the capital recovery, stable development and reinvestment phase. In addition to her family's labor, she also hires 5 to 10 seasonal workers to take care of the trees, harvest fruit and operate the entire production area.
In 2021, Hai Tan village was recognized as a model new rural village, Ms. Thu's economic model was selected as a point for production development criteria, and many delegations came to visit. She is willing to share her experiences and support 10 families in the old Hai Long commune to learn and implement model gardens and model farms in this direction.
"Not only has our family developed stably, but the local government has also praised my family for being successful in building a production model with an open, green, clean, beautiful and friendly space. This barren land that is difficult to produce can completely become a modern and effective economic development model if we are diligent and do things in the right direction," Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu shared.
