New York pushes tolls in Manhattan despite Trump's objections

On November 22, the US Department of Transportation approved the proposal of the New York City government (New York state) to impose a fee of $9 for vehicles traveling in Manhattan, starting January 5, 2025.

Manhattan, New York City (New York State, USA) is notorious for its traffic jams.

New York City has become the first US city to impose a congestion charge, specifically in Manhattan, in a move aimed at raising billions of dollars to improve public transport services and reduce traffic congestion.

Starting January 5, 2025, passenger vehicles entering 60th Street in southern Manhattan during the day will pay a toll of $9.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul reintroduced her congestion pricing plan last week, after scrapping the $15 toll on June 30.

The Federal Highway Administration said in a public letter on November 22 that it did not need to assess environmental impacts when New York State lowered its congestion charge to $9.

The UK capital London has had a similar measure since 2003, with the charge currently set at £15.

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority estimates that the new fee will reduce the number of vehicles entering Manhattan by at least 80,000 per day, helping to decongest the most congested area in the United States.

New York has decided to rush to finalize its toll plan before President-elect Donald Trump officially enters the White House on January 21, 2025. Mr. Trump owns the building in Manhattan and last week opposed the toll.

Governor Hochul said the measure was crucial to new investment in New York's subways and buses, and would help ease pressure on a public transportation plan that is saddled with $15 billion in debt.

While the daily rate for passenger vehicles is $9, trucks and buses will pay a maximum of $21.60. The nighttime rate will be reduced by 75%.

Taxis cost 75 cents per ride, while Uber/Lyft rides cost $1.50 per ride.

New York City says more than 700,000 vehicles travel through midtown Manhattan every day, and congestion there has slowed traffic to an average speed of just 7 miles per hour.
