On June 9, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a phone call with his newly appointed Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.
“The two sides reaffirmed the need to continue constructive cooperation between the two foreign ministries. The foreign ministers exchanged views on key issues of cooperation, including the activities of the intergovernmental commission on economic and trade cooperation, focusing on large-scale energy projects. They also discussed the timetable for future contacts. The top diplomats also touched on the current international and regional agenda,” the statement said.
Previously, on June 8, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Mr. Fidan also had a phone call with his US counterpart Antony Blinken.
“Today, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had a phone call with his US counterpart Antony Blinken. Issues of Sweden’s NATO membership, the normalization of Türkiye-Armenia and Azerbaijan-Armenia relations, the purchase and modernization of F-16s, as well as the Ukrainian grain deal were discussed,” the statement confirmed.
The two sides also agreed to meet soon to discuss the bilateral agenda.
Previously, on June 3, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed Mr. Hakan Fidan, a close associate and head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) since 2010, as Foreign Minister, replacing Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu.
Hakan Fidan, 55, is known for his contributions to Türkiye's national security and involvement in various diplomatic and intelligence activities. He also served as an adviser to Erdogan when the leader was prime minister.
