Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Iranian, Turkish and Lebanese counterparts ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting on January 23 to discuss the situation in the Middle East, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

According to the Ministry, the bilateral meetings, which took place in New York (USA) on January 22, focused on the situation in the Gaza Strip, Syria and the Red Sea.
Foreign Minister Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian agreed on the need to soon achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and provide humanitarian assistance to civilians.
Meanwhile, the head of Russian diplomacy and Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib discussed the importance of efforts from regional countries to adopt an immediate ceasefire.
According to the UN agenda, the Security Council will discuss "the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question".
Mr Lavrov will propose “collective efforts” at the meeting to resolve the crisis in the region.
Together with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, the Russian Foreign Minister discussed energy issues as well as "upcoming bilateral contacts".
Previously, in December 2023, the Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin could visit Türkiye in early 2024.
