American village votes in 10 minutes, giving all votes to Trump's opponent

Voting in Dixville Notch began at midnight on January 23 and the entire process, including counting the ballots, lasted only about 10 minutes, as the village had only six registered voters, according to AFP. The result was that no one voted for former US President Donald Trump and all six votes went to Ms. Haley, his only remaining rival for the Republican nomination for the White House this year.

Dixville Notch is a small village nestled in the mountains near the Canadian border. It has a tradition of voting "first in the nation" in the US primaries and on Election Day since 1960.

New Hampshire election law allows localities with fewer than 100 residents to open polling places at midnight (local time) and close them when all registered voters have completed their civic duty.

Most polling stations in New Hampshire will open between 6am and 8am on January 23. This is the second state in the US to hold a primary election in the 2024 election season, after Iowa, where Mr. Trump won overwhelmingly.

In Dixville Notch, the voting and counting process took place in a relaxed atmosphere as an accordion player in a shiny red shirt played the American national anthem to start the proceedings. Several dogs roamed around the polling place, interacting with people.

One by one, six registered voters received ballots from election officials sitting at tables, entered a curtained booth to mark their ballots, and then returned to drop them into a box.

Polls suggest Mr Trump will ultimately defeat Ms Haley, putting him in a seemingly unassailable position in the Republican race and setting up a rematch with incumbent US President Joe Biden similar to the 2020 election.

Ms Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and US ambassador to the United Nations in the Trump administration, became the former president's sole challenger after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis withdrew from the race over the weekend.
