According to Dr. Doan Thi Hue, Deputy Head of the Department of Geriatric Mental Disorders and Sleep Medicine (M8), Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital, the reality of receiving patients for examination shows that over 50% have sleep disorders. "Insomnia aggravates depression or anxiety and vice versa. People with insomnia are 4 times more likely to be depressed than people without insomnia," said Dr. Hue.

Sleep disorders are disorders related to problems with the quality, duration, and quantity of sleep, causing daytime fatigue and impaired learning, work, and social functioning. There are many different sleep disorders, of which insomnia is the most common.

Studies show that in recent years, about 80% of patients coming for examination were found to have sleep disorders related to life stress such as insomnia, sleep-wake rhythm disorders, nightmares. Of these, 5% - 6.7% of severe insomnia patients have depression and anxiety.

Insomnia can be caused by a variety of chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. It can also be a warning sign of physical or neurological problems, such as congestive heart failure, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, some patients have insomnia due to medications or other factors such as alcohol, caffeine, theobromine, and methyl xanthenes.

Worryingly, sleep disorders are co-morbid with psychiatric disorders. Thirty-five percent of patients with insomnia have a psychiatric disorder, and half of these are mood disorders.

To treat sleep disorders, patients need to be guided on healthy sleep habits, creating regular sleep habits. In addition, implementing a healthy lifestyle, combining exercise, avoiding the use of stimulants.
