(Dan Tri) - Fishermen in Binh Dinh province have just rescued and released back into the sea a rare hawksbill turtle weighing 12kg that was caught in a net.
On March 8, Mr. Dang Van Cam, captain of fishing boat BD-93077 TS, said that fishermen on his boat had just rescued a 0.6m long and 12kg hawksbill turtle that was caught in a net while fishing at sea. After removing the net, the turtle was released back into the sea.
According to information from the Binh Dinh Fisheries Department, this hawksbill turtle is an endangered species according to the classification of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is included in Appendix I of the CITES Convention, prohibiting international trade and transportation.
Since the beginning of the year, fishermen in Nhon Chau, Nhon Ly communes (Quy Nhon city) and Cat Thanh (Phu Cat district) have successfully rescued 3 sea turtles, including 2 green turtles and 1 hawksbill turtle.
Since 2016, Binh Dinh fishermen have proactively reported and participated in rescuing 39 sea turtles, including 22 hawksbill turtles, 13 green turtles and 4 green turtles. They also protected 13 sea turtle egg nests, helping 663 baby turtles return safely to the sea in the Ky Co, Con Cape and Dong Beach areas of Nhon Chau island commune, Quy Nhon city.
