On November 18, US President Joe Biden called on leaders of the Group of 20 developed and emerging economies (G20) to increase pressure on Hamas to force the armed Islamic group to cease fire with Israel.

According to AFP news agency, in his opening speech at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Mr. Biden pointed out that Hamas is currently rejecting the ceasefire agreement.

In addition, the outgoing US President also reiterated his call for Israel to limit civilian casualties in the war in Gaza that it launched after Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

"Israel has the right to defend itself. But how it defends itself... is important. We will continue to push for a ceasefire that guarantees Israel's security and brings the hostages home and ends the suffering of Palestinian people and children," he said.

It is still unclear what policies President Biden's successor, Republican Donald Trump, will pursue when he takes office on January 20, 2025.

Mr Trump has picked strong pro-Israel officials for his cabinet and has never committed to an independent Palestinian state – but his eagerness to strike historic deals makes him unpredictable.

On November 15, Hamas called on US President-elect Donald Trump to "put pressure" on Israel and said the group was "ready for a ceasefire".

On the same day, speaking at the Israeli Parliament , Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would soon bring back dozens of hostages being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip in the near future despite skepticism and criticism of him personally, emphasizing that these efforts "have not stopped for a minute."

The statement by Prime Minister Netanyahu was made in the context that one of his assistants is about to be prosecuted for leaking top secret documents to try to prove that the people's protests demanding the rescue of hostages are strengthening Hamas.

The move has fueled the views of Prime Minister Netanyahu's opponents that he does not want a hostage rescue deal.
