Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/02/2024

Antidiarrheal drugs

Pharmacist Nguyen Thien Dung, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, shared that diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and indigestion are common symptoms due to changes in eating habits during Tet. Some drugs that can treat common gastrointestinal symptoms include Diosmectite (Smecta), loperamide (Imodium), attapulgite (Actapulgite), berberine (Berberine, Berberal). These drugs fight diarrhea with many different mechanisms such as adhesion and adsorption of harmful agents, creating a protective barrier for the digestive mucosa, antibacterial or reducing intestinal motility. You can take the medicine when you have symptoms, the dosage depends on each different type of preparation according to the advice of pharmacists and doctors. These drugs are often prepared in powder form, when used, mixed with water into a suspension before drinking.

"It is important to replenish water and electrolytes when having diarrhea many times a day. When the patient has symptoms of infection such as lethargy, fever, mucus or bloody stools, they should go to the nearest medical facility for advice," pharmacist Dung advised.

Medication for constipation

Traditional Tet dishes such as banh chung and banh tet are often rich in starch, fat and lack fiber, which can cause constipation. To limit this condition, you can drink plenty of water, add green vegetables and fruits to your diet to stimulate intestinal motility, increase stool volume to make defecation easier. If the symptoms greatly affect your quality of life, you can use some drugs such as sorbitol, lactulose. These preparations are usually in powder or suspension form, when used, mix in water and drink on an empty stomach. Dosage is used according to the instructions of pharmacists and medical staff.

Stomach pain medication

Some popular antacids on the market that can be used include Kremil-S, Siloxogene, Gastropulgite, Konimag, Trimafort, Gaviscon... The drug has the effect of neutralizing excess gastric acid to reduce acidity in the stomach, reducing symptoms of gastric and duodenal ulcers, heartburn, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux.

The medicine should be taken after meals. For suspension form, it can be taken directly or diluted in water before drinking. For tablet form, chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing. Dosage should be used according to the instructions of pharmacists and medical staff.

Digestive aid

Changes in eating habits during Tet such as changing time, eating too much protein and fat and drinking alcohol can cause bloating and indigestion. Digestive enzymes such as pancreatin, alpha amylase, papain and drugs that reduce gas bubbles in the digestive tract such as simeticone in single or combined form have the effect of stimulating digestion, treating symptoms of poor appetite, indigestion, abdominal pain and bloating. Dosage according to the instructions of pharmacists and medical staff.

Pain reliever, fever reducer

Paracetamol (Panadol, Tatanol, Efferalgan, Hapacol...) is the most common pain reliever and fever reducer used in many different dosage forms: Tablets, effervescent tablets, suppositories, syrup. The drug should be used when symptoms appear, dose 325 - 650 mg at least 4 hours apart, maximum dose 4 g/day for people with normal liver function, 3 g/day for patients with impaired liver function or as directed by medical staff.

For children, paracetamol can be used in suppository or syrup form. Some non-prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that can be used include ibuprofen and aspirin, but should be used sparingly in patients with underlying cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney failure.

First aid supplies

Every household should have some first aid supplies available including bandages, sterile gauze and scissors. Solutions for cleaning and disinfecting wounds that can be purchased include povidone iodine (Povidine, Betadine), hydrogen peroxide and 70% alcohol.

People with chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure need to pay attention to monitoring blood sugar and blood pressure and follow the correct dosage and time of medication regimen as usual. In addition, patients need to stock up on enough medication for the holidays according to the doctor's advice.
