The kidneys play a very important role in health.

Foods high in sodium

Sodium is an important component in the body, but excess sodium can be harmful to people with kidney disease.

According to research in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences , when the kidneys are weak, they cannot regulate sodium balance, leading to many dangerous complications such as high blood pressure, water retention and edema.

Foods high in sodium include: Canned foods, cold cuts, french fries, fast food,...

Foods high in phosphorus

Phosphorus is an essential mineral for the body, but excess phosphorus can be harmful for people with kidney disease. When the kidneys are weak, phosphorus is not excreted effectively, leading to bone and cardiovascular problems, said Archana Batra, a nutritionist and physiotherapist in India.

Foods rich in phosphorus include dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, etc.), nuts, whole grains, soft drinks, sardines, and fish eggs.

Foods rich in potassium

When the kidneys are weak, potassium is not excreted efficiently, leading to a buildup in the blood, causing heart problems.

According to research in Advances in Nutrition , some potassium-rich foods that should be limited include: Bananas, avocados, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.

Protein rich foods

Protein is an essential nutrient for weight loss, building muscle, bones,... However, consuming too much protein can put pressure on the kidneys, especially for people with kidney disease.

According to research published in the journal of the American Society of Nephrology , a long-term high-protein diet can cause high blood pressure and worsen kidney disease.

Some protein-rich foods to note include red meat, eggs, dairy products...

Foods high in oxalate

“Oxalate is a natural compound found in some foods that can contribute to kidney stone formation, especially in people who are prone to oxalate kidney stones,” says Batra.

Foods rich in oxalates include spinach, beets, nuts, chocolate, and alcohol.

In addition to controlling your diet, some things you can do to support kidney disease treatment include: Drinking enough water; checking your blood pressure regularly; checking sodium, potassium and phosphorus content on food labels; cooking at home; regular health check-ups...
