“I know Taiwan very well and have great respect for the people of Taiwan. They have about 100 percent of our chip business. I think Taiwan should pay for our defense. We’re like an insurance company, Taiwan doesn’t give us anything,” Trump said in an interview with Bloomberg on June 25, published on July 16.

The United States is Taiwan’s most important arms supplier. The two sides do not have a formal military agreement, but the US has a law requiring Washington to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, according to Reuters.

Asked about Donald Trump's comments, Taiwan's Chief Executive Officer Cheo Wing-chai said the island was ready to take on more responsibility for its own defense and was gradually increasing military spending.

In April, the US Congress passed a bill providing $95 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Washington's partners, including the island of Taiwan.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly stressed that it does not rule out the use of force against the island.

After Mr. Trump's interview was published, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), one of the world's leading chip manufacturers, recorded a stock price decrease of more than 2% on the morning of July 17.
