Trump praises Zelensky for his bravery, but does not commit to supporting European forces in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has stopped short of committing military support to European forces if deployed in Ukraine, saying he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin will honor a deal to end the conflict.

On February 27, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the White House to discuss with President Trump many topics such as trade, tariffs and especially the conflict in Ukraine.

According to CNN, most of the interactions between the two leaders in the Oval Office were cordial and President Trump said the two discussed steps to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Trump "dodges" British Prime Minister's call to ensure security for Ukraine

Prime Minister Starmer said after the meeting that he was working closely with European leaders on the ceasefire and declared that Britain was ready to send ground forces and aircraft to support the deal with allies, "because that is the only way to keep the peace ".

Meanwhile, President Trump refused to commit to deploying US forces to support European peacekeeping forces, although he said the US always helps the British military when they need it.

"They can take care of themselves very well. It sounds like I'm being flippant but it's not. The British have been great soldiers, they've been an incredible army and they can take care of themselves. If they need help, I'll be there for them but they don't need help," Trump said.

Mr. Trump then said he would sign a multi-billion-dollar mineral deal with Ukraine and argued that the presence of American workers there would ensure Kyiv's security and prevent Russia from continuing its attacks, according to The Guardian .

"Putin will keep his word"

In addition, the White House owner is confident that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not violate the agreement if the parties reach an agreement. "I think he will keep his word. I have known him for a long time and I do not believe he will not keep his word," President Trump said.

Asked if the peace deal would include a provision to reclaim Ukrainian territory controlled by Russia, President Trump said he would "certainly try to get as much back as we can."

Mr. Trump: Ukraine can "forget" about joining NATO, Europe must worry about security because it is "next door"

Previously, the Kremlin affirmed that the territories in Ukraine had been annexed into Ukrainian territory and could not be negotiated.

On the other hand, President Trump on February 27 reversed his previous comments when he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator. "Did I say that? I can't believe I said that," Mr. Trump said. The leader admitted that the relationship between the two had been a bit rocky over financial support but has now stabilized. He praised Mr. Zelensky as "very brave" and the two got along really well.

President Zelensky arrived in Washington DC on February 27 and will meet with President Trump on February 28 (US time). The two sides are expected to sign a mineral agreement, which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said was "complete and no further negotiations."
