Trump takes power, no European hero can replace America, Ukraine is the biggest loser

In an article published in the Financial Times (FT), American political scientist Francis Fukuyama commented that Ukraine will suffer more damage than other international factors when Republican candidate Donald Trump takes power as US leader.

“Ukraine is the biggest loser; the military struggle against Russia has been on the wane even before the election, and Trump could force Kiev to settle on Moscow’s terms by refusing to supply weapons, as the Republicans did for six months this winter,” Fukuyama predicted.

Fukuyama recalled how Mr Trump has threatened to withdraw from NATO, “but even if he doesn’t do so, he could seriously weaken the alliance” by refusing to implement Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty on mutual defence.

"There are no European heroes who can replace the US as NATO's leader, so the US's ability to stand up to Russia and China in the future is also in big question. America's East Asian allies and friends are not in a better position either. Although Mr. Trump has a tough stance on China, he also admires (Chinese leader) Xi Jinping for his strong personality," Mr. Fukuyama noted.

Fukuyama argues he has good reason to believe that, in his second term, Mr Trump will be “much more effective” in achieving his agenda than he was in his first term.
