Trump says China's DeepSeek AI is a "wake-up call" to the US

(CLO) US President Donald Trump declared that the emergence of the low-cost artificial intelligence (AI) model DeepSeek from China is a "wake-up call" for US technology companies.

Speaking at a Republican convention in Miami, Mr. Trump emphasized: “China's launch of AI DeepSeek should be seen as a reminder that we must focus all our efforts to compete and win.”

However, he also believes that this shock could have a positive impact, especially in pushing US technology companies to innovate at lower costs.

“I think this could be positive,” he said. “Instead of spending billions of dollars, companies will spend less but hopefully still create an equally effective solution.”

Mr Trump's comments came after shares of Nvidia, the leading US chipmaker, led the tech industry's decline, with its total market capitalisation losing nearly $600 billion.

DeepSeek, a product of a startup based in Hangzhou, China, is said to be able to compete with leading US AI technologies, but at a significantly lower development cost than US companies.

Just last week, after being sworn in for his second term, Mr. Trump announced a $500 billion project to build AI infrastructure in the United States, led by Japan’s SoftBank and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

The project's goal is to strengthen America's technological prowess to compete with the strong rise of China, especially as the country continues to invest heavily in the fields of AI, 5G technology and big data.

The US-China AI rivalry is not just a technological race, but also part of a larger geopolitical rivalry. China’s DeepSeek AI’s significant advances at low cost have raised concerns that the US could lose its lead in the AI industry.
