Donald Trump declared victory as projections showed he was on track to win enough electoral votes to secure his return to the White House.

Mr Trump pledged that his second term would usher in a “new golden age for America”.

Mr Trump's celebratory speech focused on domestic policies, saying: "America needs a strong and powerful military, but ideally we don't have to use it."

Recalling his first term from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Trump declared "we have no war", when the US hardly participated in any new major armed conflicts.

“My first four years in office were without war, except that we defeated ISIS. We defeated ISIS in record time,” he said, referring to the international military campaign in the Middle East against the Islamic State terrorist organization.

"I will not start a war. I will stop wars," Mr. Trump declared in the context of a wide open door to returning to the White House.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly declared that he would end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine "within 24 hours" if re-elected, possibly even before he officially takes office as president.

However, the Republican presidential candidate has never publicly stated his plan to end the conflict in Ukraine. Mr. Trump is believed to intend to put pressure on Moscow and Kiev to force both to make concessions.

The Russian government has said it will not accept any resolution that simply freezes the status quo without addressing the root causes of the conflict.
