Ferry to Cat Ba Island congested despite new wharf

VnExpressVnExpress30/03/2024

Hai Phong Tourists flock to Cat Ba, Cat Hai district on weekends, causing the new Dong Bai ferry terminal to be overloaded, with cars lining up for more than a kilometer.

The congestion started from 10am to 4pm and shows no signs of stopping. Mr. Vu Manh Trung, Head of Dong Bai ferry terminal, said that 100% of capacity has been mobilized with 5 large ferries and 4 small ferries running continuously. "We are focusing on regulating, we cannot count the number of passengers using the ferry yet, but it is extremely crowded," Mr. Trung said.

Living in Hong Bang district, Mr. Nguyen Hong Phong drove his family to Cat Ba for the weekend, believing that the newly opened terminal would be more spacious than the old terminal, so there would be no traffic jams. "But in an hour I could only travel about 50 meters. It took me two hours to get close to the waiting room, not knowing when I could get off the ferry. Luckily it's cool today," Mr. Phong said.

Behind Mr. Phong, cars with license plates from many northern provinces lined up for more than a kilometer. Many drivers impatiently opened their doors to look outside.

On the occasion of March 31 - April 1, on Cat Ba Island, the Cat Hai island district government organized the Fishing Village Festival and opened the tourist season with a series of attractive events such as: Hot air balloon festival, Fastest X Cat Ba Amatina race, dragon boat race...

Traffic congestion at the ferry terminal to Cat Ba Island has been going on for many years. Since March 1, Dong Bai ferry terminal has replaced Got ferry terminal, carrying passengers and vehicles from the mainland to Cat Ba Island. However, because the passenger ferries are old, vehicles have difficulty getting on and off the ferries, causing some congestion.

Hai Phong City People's Committee has directed the construction of at least 5 new modern, high-speed ferries with a capacity of about 15 cars and hundreds of passengers to supplement Dong Bai ferry in the near future.
