New research, just published in the scientific journal Nutrients, has found that incorporating lean red meat into a healthy, consistent diet can improve gut microbiota diversity and heart health.

Researchers from Purdue University (USA) wanted to examine how eating lean red meat combined with following a balanced diet affects health, especially the diversity of gut bacteria and cardiovascular health indicators.

Lean red meat, if eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet, is unlikely to adversely affect gut or heart health.

They conducted a test on healthy young people who consumed 85g of lean red meat (pork, beef) per day in combination with a healthy, balanced diet.

The results showed that consistent adherence to a balanced diet, including lean red meat from beef or pork, led to sustained improvements in gut microbiota diversity and cardiovascular markers, such as "bad" cholesterol levels, according to the science site ScitechDaily.

When participants adopted a healthy diet, their gut microbiota shifted toward a beneficial composition and cardiovascular markers, such as “bad” cholesterol, showed improvement and were closely linked to changes in the gut microbiota, explained lead author Wayne Campbell, PhD, professor of nutritional sciences at Purdue University.

These results may also suggest that gut bacteria play an important role in the impact of diet on heart health and emphasize that lean red meat, if eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet, may not adversely affect gut or heart health, according to ScitechDaily.

Dr. Campbell suggests eating lean red meat daily as part of a healthy, balanced diet to support long-term health.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting recommendations to consume a balanced, healthy diet, which may include lean red meat, for long-term health benefits.
