VnExpressVnExpress11/02/2024

Abusing alcohol, soft drinks, eating too much protein, eating too much salt, and holding urine are things that should be limited to protect kidney and urinary health during Tet.

Lunar New Year is an occasion for people to gather, so it is inevitable that eating and drinking, and the pace of life is somewhat more relaxed than usual. To prevent urinary diseases during Tet, Master, Doctor Nguyen Truong Hoan, Department of Urology, Center for Urology - Nephrology - Andrology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, notes some things to limit below.

Beer, wine, carbonated soft drinks

Beer, wine and carbonated soft drinks are the top choices of many people during Tet. However, consuming too much beer, wine and carbonated soft drinks leads to increased excretion through the kidneys, creating favorable conditions for pre-existing kidney stones to fall into the ureter, causing one-sided renal colic.

In addition, alcoholic beverages can inhibit the activity of the urethral sphincter (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside), leading to difficulty urinating, especially in people with pre-existing prostate disease.

Eat salty

Familiar dishes during Tet such as pickled vegetables, ham, braised pork with duck eggs... are often seasoned with many spices, including salt or fish sauce. Regularly eating foods containing a lot of salt increases the amount of calcium lost in the urine. The higher the concentration of calcium in the urine, the easier it is to form stones.

Eat a lot of meat

Almost every Tet dish has meat. Eating a lot of animal meat increases the acid concentration in urine, creating conditions for uric acid stones and oxalate stones to form.

People with impaired kidney function need to limit protein and salt to avoid overloading the kidneys, which can easily make the disease worse.

Hold urine

Urination is one of the ways for the body to excrete waste, residue, and excess substances. The habit of holding urine allows time for waste to settle and accumulate into stones.

In addition, frequently holding urine increases the risk of urinary tract infections, gradually weakens the bladder and urethral muscles, leading to urinary incontinence.

Drink less water

Tet in the South is often a hot season. People going out to participate in fun activities and New Year greetings easily sweat. Not drinking enough water causes the concentration of minerals in urine to increase, concentrated urine is more likely to create urinary stones.

To avoid the risk of urinary stones during Tet, you need to drink 2-3 liters of water per day, including filtered water and fruit juice. Limit drinking carbonated soft drinks, beer, wine or drinking tea and coffee instead of filtered water.
