Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said today, November 30, that Russia does not rule out the possibility of resuming nuclear tests.

Asked in an interview with TASS today, November 30, whether Russia was considering nuclear testing as a response to the US's escalating actions, Ryabkov replied that "this issue is being discussed," according to RT.

“I just want to say that the situation is quite complicated. This issue is constantly being considered in all its elements and aspects,” Mr. Ryabkov added.

Despite being a nuclear power, modern Russia has never conducted a nuclear test under its voluntary moratorium on nuclear testing, since the last test was conducted in 1990 before the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to RT.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow should be ready to resume nuclear testing if the US did so. "We know for sure that some people in Washington are considering conducting actual tests of their nuclear weapons while the US is developing new types of nuclear weapons," Putin said at the time.

"Of course, we will not be the first to do this, but if the United States conducts such a test, then we will do the same," Putin stressed. The United States, Russia's main nuclear rival, last conducted a nuclear test in 1992.

Deputy Minister Ryabkov made the above statement after Washington allowed Ukraine to carry out attacks deep into Russian territory with long-range weapons provided by the US, despite Moscow's warning that this would lead to an escalation of the conflict, according to RT.

There is currently no information about the US reaction to Mr. Ryabkov's statement.
