South Korea's acting president calls Biden after Yoon's impeachment

Acting President of South Korea Han Duck-soo had a phone call with US President Joe Biden on December 15, pledging to maintain and develop the alliance between the two countries.


Yonhap News Agency reported on December 15 that Mr. Han had a 16-minute phone call with President Biden. The call took place after the National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14.

“Our government will continue to implement diplomatic and security policies and make efforts to ensure that the US-South Korea alliance is maintained and developed without wavering,” Mr. Han said during a phone call with Mr. Biden.

Mr. Han stressed the importance of strengthening the joint defense posture between South Korea and the United States in the face of common challenges, such as the nuclear threat from the DPRK and the deepening cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

According to Mr. Han's office, US President Biden thanked the acting President of South Korea for his explanation and expressed confidence in democracy and resilience in South Korea.

Mr. Biden said the strong US-ROK alliance remains unchanged and he will continue to work with Seoul to develop and strengthen the US-ROK alliance and US-ROK-Japan cooperation.

In return, Mr. Han thanked Mr. Biden for the US President's attention and efforts in strongly developing the bilateral alliance and trilateral cooperation with Japan during his term. Mr. Biden pledged to continue supporting the development of the alliance.

Reuters reported that after being impeached in connection with the controversial decision to impose martial law, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will be suspended from his presidential positions and the South Korean constitution stipulates that the prime minister will be the one to temporarily hold the presidency.

Also on December 15, the opposition Democratic Party (DP) in South Korea said it had no intention of impeaching acting President and Prime Minister Han, according to Reuters.
