The management board of Hon Cau Marine Protected Area, Lien Huong Commune, Lam Dong Province, said that on July 11, while visiting the beach, the management board's patrol team discovered a nest of sea turtle eggs. This is the sixth nest of turtle eggs discovered this year.
The area where the turtle egg nest was discovered was at Cau Cang beach, Hon Cau island. The nest contained 112 eggs.
The eggs were initially identified as belonging to the green sea turtle ( Chelonia mydas ). This is a sea turtle species listed in the Vietnam Red Book and is considered an endangered, rare species in need of conservation.
Hon Cau Marine Protected Area staff and volunteers collected, preserved and moved all the eggs to the hatching area of the patrol and control station. Under normal weather conditions, the eggs will hatch after 45 - 60 days.
This is the second time this year that the mother turtle has returned to Hon Cau to lay eggs. The last time was on June 23 with a nest of 108 eggs. This is a very encouraging sign.

Sea turtle breeding season is usually from May to October every year. In Hon Cau, mainly green sea turtles come to lay eggs.
To ensure absolute safety for mother turtles during the breeding season, staff and volunteers of Hon Cau Marine Reserve regularly patrol the beach and watch for turtles.
When a turtle is discovered laying eggs, staff and volunteers will immediately remove the egg nest and erase all traces of the mother turtle, preventing those who want to profit from the turtle from following her trail.
Hon Cau Marine Reserve is located about 10km from the mainland and is one of 16 marine reserves of special significance to Vietnam's marine environment.
The total area of the reserve is about 12,500 hectares, including the island area, the protection belt, core zones, buffer zones, and ecological restoration zones.
This is a conservation area with a diverse ecosystem including coral reefs, seagrass beds and is also the habitat and spawning ground of many rare aquatic species with important economic and ecological value. Among them, sea turtles are rare animals with a high risk of extinction.
In recent years, in order to raise public awareness of the importance of marine conservation and sea turtle protection by creating opportunities for people to participate in patrolling and protecting sea turtles at nesting grounds on the island, Hon Cau Marine Protected Area has called on volunteers to come to the island to participate in activities, successfully protecting many turtle egg nests, hatching and releasing thousands of baby turtles into the sea.
