Samsung Galaxy S25 goes backwards in many important features

VTC NewsVTC News28/11/2024

The Galaxy S25 series is expected to launch in the next few months, and as we get closer to the launch date, more and more leaks and rumors are starting to emerge. In particular, versions of the phone have recently appeared on the US Federal Communications Commission website, confirming a few key specs.

The list includes all three models in the Galaxy S25 series that have just been certified for sale in the US. Some of the information has been leaked before, but there are also some surprising "retrogrades".

The FCC filing confirms the US model numbers: SM-931U for the Galaxy S25, SM-936U for the S25 Plus, and SM-938U for the S25 Ultra. As expected, all three devices will come with 5G, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, GNSS, and NFC, all the connectivity features you'd expect from a premium smartphone. Of course, the Galaxy S25 Ultra wouldn't be complete without the trusty S Pen, which also appears with the model number EJ-PS938.

The standard S25 series is expected to take a step back in wireless charging capabilities.

The standard S25 series is expected to take a step back in wireless charging capabilities.

The new information is that the FCC confirms that the Galaxy S25 Plus and S25 Ultra will support UWB (ultra wideband), which is useful for precise tracking features like smart tags or locating lost devices. Unfortunately, the standard Galaxy S25 will not have this feature.

As for charging, the standard model will see a significant step back. The Galaxy S25 comes with the model number EP-TA800 travel adapter, which is equivalent to 25W wired charging — just like the previous generation. However, wireless charging will likely only support up to 9W, instead of 15W like the previous generation.

As for the two premium versions, the Galaxy S25 Plus and S25 Ultra have been tested with the EP-T2510 travel adapter, suggesting they will continue to use the previous generation's 45W wired fast charging.

While the FCC filing doesn’t explicitly mention battery capacity, previous rumors suggest the S25 series will likely retain the same battery size as the S24 series. Additionally, we can expect the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset to be at the heart of all three models.
