The race is only for good students
For many years, pedagogy has been one of the majors with the highest benchmark scores. Gone are the days when it was considered “rats running in the same cage”, now pedagogy is an extremely difficult playground even for excellent students.
Every year, at top teacher training schools, tens of thousands of excellent students drop out of school when the benchmark scores are too high.

In the 2024 admission season, many pedagogical majors have a benchmark score of 28 or 29 points. To be admitted, students must achieve a minimum score of 9 or above in each subject, close to 10 points.
At Hanoi National University of Education, there are 8 pedagogical majors with a benchmark score of over 28, candidates must achieve a threshold equivalent to 9.5 points/subject.
The standard score for history and literature pedagogy of this school is 29.3, and candidates must achieve a minimum score of 9.8 points/subject to be admitted.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, 2024 is considered an unprecedentedly fierce race among excellent students when the number of applications increased sharply to more than 31,000 candidates. Notably, the number of applications for admission to the school reached 51,625, an increase of 120% compared to 2023.
According to the method of considering high school graduation scores, many majors of this school have a standard score of over 27. The two majors of history pedagogy and literature pedagogy have the highest score of 28.6 points; geography pedagogy has a standard score of 28.37.
With the method of considering academic records, many majors such as chemistry education, mathematics education, physics education, and biology education have standard scores ranging from 29.48 to the highest of 29.81. To be admitted, candidates must achieve each subject in the subject group reaching the threshold of 10 points/subject.
In 2024, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training , pedagogy is the industry with the highest number of candidates registering for admission, up to 85% compared to the previous year.
This year's admission season, the education industry continues to maintain its appeal with the predicted benchmark scores still at the top, continuing to "damage" excellent students.

It can be seen that this year's separate exam of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education attracted nearly 30,000 candidates; the separate exam of Hanoi University of Education attracted nearly 18,000 candidates. This number does not include candidates admitted by other admission methods.
While the total enrollment target of these two schools in 2025 is only about 10,000 candidates.
Students go to school tuition-free, receive hundreds of millions of dong
In early 2025, the accounts of many students studying pedagogy in Ho Chi Minh City unexpectedly received more than 127 million VND.

This is the living allowance for local pedagogical students ordered in Ho Chi Minh City according to Decree 116/2020 of the Government.
It is known that more than 600 pedagogical students studying at two schools, Saigon University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, have been accepted at this time. These are students admitted to university in 2021 and are the first class to apply the support policy according to Decree 116/2020 of the Government.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, one of the levers that creates the attraction of the education sector is the policy of supporting living expenses and tuition fees according to Decree 116/2020.
The decree stipulates that teacher training students are supported by the state with tuition fees equal to the tuition fees charged by the teacher training institution where they study. At the same time, students are supported by the state with 3.63 million VND/month to cover living expenses during their time studying at the school.
This policy creates a more attractive “combo” for choosing a career when teacher training students are both exempted from tuition fees and have their living expenses paid.
According to Dr. Huynh Trung Phong, Director of the Center for Student Support and Startup Development at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Decree 116 creates attraction for the education sector, attracting many candidates to participate in the admission exam.
Particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, policies on treatment and income for teachers have also attracted students in recent years.
Besides, the high level of competition in the education sector and high benchmark scores also come from the fact that the number of candidates taking the education entrance exam is large, while the quota for education sectors is low.

It is predicted that the education sector will continue to be a place of fierce competition in the coming time when the Law on Teachers is passed by the 15th National Assembly, effective from 2026. In particular, teachers' salaries are ranked highest in the administrative career salary scale system.
This policy is expected to attract human resources for the education sector as well as solve many problems in education such as helping teachers feel secure in their profession as well as limiting the widespread situation of extra teaching...
