SpaceX's Starship rocket, the world's largest and most powerful, has failed to launch again, a new obstacle for America's efforts to explore the moon and Mars.

SpaceX Starship rocket launched in Texas

Reuters reported on March 7 that SpaceX lost contact with its Starship rocket system just minutes after launch in Texas (USA), in its second consecutive failure.

Live footage of the launch showed billionaire Elon Musk's company losing control of Starship and the engines shutting down.

The launch comes nearly two months after another Starship rocket exploded, sending debris raining down on the British-controlled Turks and Caicos Islands in the Atlantic. In the latest launch, which took place on the evening of March 6 (local time), the 123-meter-long rocket was lifted off and the first stage was then held back on the launch pad by giant mechanical arms.

The rocket was originally scheduled to continue east to a controlled location in the Indian Ocean. The flight was expected to last about an hour, and was to test the satellite that was left unfinished after a failed launch in January.

NASA is closely monitoring the launch, having ordered Starship to take astronauts to the moon this decade. Musk also plans to head to Mars with Starship, the world’s largest and most powerful rocket.

As before, Starship will have four dummy satellites to launch when the spacecraft reaches space on its eighth test flight, AP reported. They are similar to SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites and are expected to fall back down.

Components like Starship's computers and fuel systems are being redesigned to prepare for the next big step: returning the spacecraft to the launch site like a rocket booster.

During the January launch, SpaceX caught the booster on the launch pad, but Starship exploded minutes later over the Atlantic Ocean. According to an ongoing investigation, leaking fuel caused a series of fires that shut down the rocket’s engines, triggering the self-destruct system that was designed to activate.
