On December 20, the ENT Hospital announced that it had successfully performed a complex head and neck surgery for Mr. NTD, who suffered from a rare tracheal stenosis and tracheoesophageal fistula.

Previously, Mr. NTD (living in An Giang ) felt short of breath for 3 days, so he went to the hospital for examination and treatment for 20 days. However, the condition did not improve, even coughing up blood. Doctors diagnosed patient D. with esophageal fistula and pneumonia.

After stable treatment, the patient was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in June this year. Mr. D. was admitted to the hospital weighing only 39kg.

Here, doctors performed two surgeries to close the fistula and cut the patient's tracheal stenosis. After the first surgery, Mr. D. gained 20kg, recovered well, and was able to undergo a second surgery. The two surgeries were four months apart.

Doctor Hoang Ba Dung, head of the otolaryngology department at Cho Ray Hospital, said this was the first time the otolaryngology department had received a serious and rare case like Mr. D.

Before the decision to operate, the hospital's blood bank did not have enough blood. However, thanks to the patient's family's active mobilization of blood, the surgery went as scheduled, helping to "revive" Mr. D's breathing.

Mr. D. is now recovering well, can breathe naturally, talk normally and is about to be discharged from the hospital.

Surgery to treat esophageal stricture and fistula

Dr. Hoang Ba Dung said that tracheal stenosis and tracheoesophageal fistula are rare diseases. The cause is intubation lasting more than 10 days when the patient is in a coma.

With this condition, patients can regain natural breathing through surgery. In cases where surgery is not possible due to poor health, patients can still wear a breathing tube to support their daily activities.
