Knife attack in Sydney, at least 5 people killed

On the afternoon of April 13, a man stabbed several people at Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney, Australia, killing at least 5 people. A series of gunshots were also heard.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, at around 3:10 p.m. local time, a man entered a restaurant at Bondi Junction shopping center. He then left the center and returned at around 3:20 p.m., stabbing nine people with a knife.

According to New South Wales state police, in addition to the five people killed, among the eight injured victims taken to hospital, some are in critical condition.

Police have cordoned off the area and advised people to stay away. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the shopping centre after the incident. A witness said the task force was deployed 20 minutes after people left the shopping centre.

Initial investigation indicates the man acted alone and does not appear to be on the federal terrorist watch list.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on social media that he had been briefed by federal police on the Bondi Junction attack. “Tragically, multiple casualties have been reported and the thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones,” Mr Albanese wrote on X.
