Airlines currently decide their flight schedules and destinations. But Dutch startup Electron Aviation is breaking the ice by offering a flight system that allows passengers to choose when and where they fly, Design Boom reported on May 30. Electron Aviation is also partnering with Twente Airport to offer zero-emission travel by 2027 on its Electron 5, an electric flying taxi.

“We chose an all-electric aircraft for two reasons. First, it represents our goal of zero direct CO2 emissions. Second, it offers the lowest operating costs, allowing us to offer the service at prices comparable to economy class, and even comparable to train fares in some countries,” said Josef Mouris, CEO and co-founder of Electron Aviation.

The Electron 5 can carry up to five passengers. By optimizing the size of the aircraft, the design team ensures it is efficient and provides a comfortable experience for passengers.

The Electron 5 has panoramic windows, larger than those on commercial aircraft, allowing passengers to enjoy the outside view. The aircraft is equipped with a backup engine with dual motors at the back to ensure safety during flight. Passengers will sit on comfortable seats typically found in luxury sports cars. The rows of seats can be moved, allowing passengers to arrange the space as desired.

The new aircraft is expected to operate at an altitude of 3,000 meters, at a speed of 300 kilometers per hour, and with a maximum range of 750 kilometers. As an on-demand service, the electric flying taxi will only take off when a passenger books a ride through a dedicated app. From Twente airport, the aircraft can reach Berlin, London or Paris in less than two hours.
