Russian tennis player wins but still 'demands to play again' at Wimbledon 2025

On the evening of July 7, a humorous situation occurred at Wimbledon 2025 during the match between tennis players Mirra Andreeva and Emma Navarro.

It was a memorable moment of celebration for Mirra Andreeva as she beat Emma Navarro on Centre Court to reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final.

However, what was surprising was that at the end of the match, the Russian player did not know he had won and was still preparing for the next point.

Mirra Andreeva admits she "completely forgot the score" and didn't realise she had beaten Emma Navarro to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Andreeva won the final game to defeat Navarro 6-2, 6-3, and entered the top eight at a Grand Slam for the first time. But the 18-year-old didn't immediately realise she had won.

Andreeva initially turned around, preparing for the next point, even as the referee called "game, set and match Andreeva". Navarro was already waiting at the net to shake hands when Andreeva woke up, hurriedly ran up, and raised her hand to apologize to her opponent.

"I kept telling myself that I wasn't leading, I was trailing," Andreeva laughed as she explained the situation after the match. "That helped me stay focused and I completely forgot about the score. I'm glad I did that, because I think I would have been three times more nervous on match point," Andreeva said.

Andreeva’s mind was also probably distracted by the discovery of Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champion, sitting in the Royal Box on Centre Court. Just days earlier, Andreeva had singled Federer out as one of three people – along with Andy Murray and Ryan Gosling – she wanted to see watching her play from the Royal Box. And she didn’t have to wait long for her wish to come true.

"I really tried my best not to look that way," she said after the match about Federer's presence.

"I knew as soon as I looked over there, I would lose my concentration completely. So I looked at 4-1. I saw Roger and Mirka. Honestly, it meant a lot to me. It was one of my dreams, to meet them in real life," Andreeva continued.

Andreeva is yet to drop a set and will face Belinda Bencic in the next round, who is also reaching her first Wimbledon quarter-final.
