Fishermen accidentally 'caught' an American nuclear submarine while fishing

A Norwegian fisherman was surprised to learn that his fishing net had been caught in the propeller of a US Navy nuclear submarine.

According to Business Insider on November 15, the above-mentioned person is Mr. Harald Engen, who was delivering fish to the village of Malangen in western Norway when he received news of the special "catch". He was informed that his net had been caught in the propeller, believed to be of the nuclear-powered submarine USS Virginia of the US Navy, and was being dragged 2 nautical miles (nearly 4 km) away.

The submarine was on its way as it had just left the port of Tromso (Norway) when it encountered the above incident, forcing the Norwegian Coast Guard to dispatch a ship to assist in cutting the net.

Mr Engen told Norwegian media that the coastguard had contacted him and suggested replacing the net, adding that he was not angry that his fishing net had become entangled in the propeller. “I know of other ships passing by and having their fishing nets get tangled, but I have never heard of a submarine having this happen,” he said.

US 6th Fleet spokesman Pierson Hawkins confirmed some details of the incident, which occurred on November 11, but declined to confirm the name of the submarine involved. He said no one was injured and the cause of the incident is under investigation. “In terms of compensation, when the US is responsible for damage to civilian equipment, there is a reimbursement process,” Hawkins said.

The US official did not specify what the US submarine was doing off the coast of Norway, saying the US is a claimant in the Arctic and has long-standing security interests in the region.

There have been several deployments of US Navy assets in Norwegian waters in recent years as Washington and Oslo have increased cooperation. In October, the Norwegian armed forces announced joint naval exercises through November with the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier strike group.

Earlier in June, the US Navy's Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Tennessee and cruiser USS Normandy were deployed to the Norwegian Sea in response to Russian exercises, according to defense website Army Recognition .
