Hanoi Ms. Hang, 40 years old, had thyroid cancer for 5 years, had severe preeclampsia during her third pregnancy, the doctor performed a cesarean section at week 38.
Before that, she was tired, had headaches, and felt dizzy, thinking it was due to pregnancy. At the end of September, she went to Tam Anh General Hospital, her blood pressure increased to 160/110 mmHg, the doctor diagnosed her with severe preeclampsia, which progressed to HELLP syndrome causing hemolysis, increased liver enzymes, and low platelets. The pregnant woman was at risk of multiple organ failure, death of both mother and child.
The team performed an emergency cesarean section and the baby was born healthy at 38 weeks, weighing 2.9 kg. The doctor continued to monitor the mother's condition.

According to Dr. Hoang Kim Uoc, Head of the Department of Endocrinology - Diabetes, thyroid cancer patients, total thyroidectomy increases the possibility of post-operative hypoparathyroidism. Pregnant patients, hormonal changes, and inadequate mineral supplementation lead to calcium, potassium, and magnesium deficiencies, increasing the risk of preeclampsia.
MSc. Dr. Dinh Thi Hien Le, Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, said that preeclampsia is a common obstetric complication that can occur in all pregnant women. If not detected early, it will cause dangerous eclampsia, causing deep coma. Preeclampsia can progress to HELLP syndrome with a mortality rate of 30%. The mother can also suffer from a stroke, massive brain hemorrhage, and death. The fetus is at risk of fetal distress and loss of fetal heart in the womb.
Signs of preeclampsia are often vague and progress silently. In some cases, pregnant women have high blood pressure, accompanied by headaches, dizziness, and pain in the epigastric region.
Doctor Hien Le recommends that pregnant women with symptoms of headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, pain in the epigastric region or right rib cage, blurred vision, little urine, swelling and stiffness of the whole body... should go to the hospital immediately.
