Cities around the world are bustling to welcome the New Year 2025 with colorful festivals, honoring unique cultures and traditions, after a tumultuous year.

Countries in the South Pacific will be the first to enter 2025. In Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, thousands are expected to flock to the city centre or climb to the top of the city's volcano to watch fireworks and light shows. Two hours later in Australia, more than 1 million people are expected to gather at Sydney Harbour to watch the traditional New Year's fireworks display.

In Japan, temples were closed ahead of the country's biggest holiday for cleaning. According to Asian beliefs, the upcoming Year of the Snake is a year of rebirth. Shops in Japan have been selling snake figurines and snake-themed goods.

In South Korea, the New Year’s atmosphere was more subdued. Festivals were canceled or scaled back as the country entered a period of national mourning for the 179 victims of the Jeju Air plane crash on December 29.

Paris, the capital of France, will close 2024 with a traditional countdown and a spectacular fireworks display on the Champs-Elysées. London, the capital of England, will also welcome the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display along the Thames and a colorful parade through the city center on January 1, 2025. However, festivals in Edinburgh, Scotland, will have to be canceled due to the storm.

In the Americas, the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro will host a massive New Year's Eve party at Copacabana Beach, expected to draw more than 2 million people. Thousands of visitors on six cruise ships will witness a 12-minute fireworks display at sea.

New York City will host the traditional ball drop in Times Square. This year's celebration will include musical performances by TLC, the Jonas Brothers, Rita Ora and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

The party, which will take place across several blocks around the city’s main tourist hub and main stage, is expected to draw thousands of people despite the cold, rainy weather. Las Vegas will also be in full swing, as the city bids farewell to 2024 with an eight-minute fireworks display on the Las Vegas Strip. More than 340,000 people are expected to attend, along with a special countdown at the Sphere, a new landmark in the city.

Celebrations will take place around the world as 2025 is welcomed in different time zones. American Samoa is one of the last places to enter 2025, 24 hours after New Zealand.
