Specifically, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has advised that for better digestion and absorption of nutrients, there are two times when you should not drink coffee, according to India TV.

While acknowledging the cultural importance of tea and coffee, ICMR cautions against excessive coffee consumption due to its potential health effects, as does tea.

India's top health body has recently issued a noteworthy advisory regarding coffee.

Leading researchers from the Medical Council explain that both coffee and tea contain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and is addictive.

Specifically, the ICRM guidelines highlight the caffeine content of various teas and coffees. For example, a 150 ml cup of coffee contains 80-120 mg of caffeine, while a packet of instant coffee contains around 50-65 mg.

On the other hand, the amount of caffeine in tea ranges from 30 to 65 mg per cup. And moderation is key, with the recommended daily caffeine intake capped at 300 mg.

When should you not drink coffee?

A particularly noteworthy note from ICMR is to avoid drinking coffee and tea at least 1 hour before and after meals. The reason is that the tannin content in these drinks has the side effect of hindering the absorption of iron in the body. This can lead to iron deficiency and anemia, according to India TV.

Furthermore, excessive coffee consumption can increase blood pressure and heart abnormalities, so the guidelines emphasize the importance of conscious consumption.

The guidelines also stress that drinking tea without milk can bring many health benefits such as improving blood circulation and reducing the risk of coronary artery disease and stomach cancer.

ICMR also advocates a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and seafood, while limiting intake of fat, sugar and salt.
