The Prime Minister asked the OECD to consider allowing Vietnam to join the OECD soon, saying that Vietnam will fully meet the procedures, standards and conditions to join the OECD and integrate more deeply into the world economy .
On the occasion of attending the 55th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), on the morning of January 22, local time, in Davos (Switzerland), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann.
Expressing his gratitude for the companionship and support that OECD has given Vietnam during its role as Co-Chair of the Southeast Asia Programme, as well as in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic and policy consultation over the past time, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the good cooperative relationship between Vietnam and OECD; affirming that the two recent Southeast Asia Programme Ministerial Meetings held in Hanoi contributed to bringing OECD and Southeast Asia closer together.
Sharing about Vietnam's strategic development orientations, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that based on the achievements of 40 years of Renovation, Vietnam identified 2025 as the starting year for a new era - the era of striving to develop strongly and become a developed country by 2045.
In order to promote the cooperation between Vietnam and OECD to become more practical and effective, the Prime Minister requested the Secretary General to direct the OECD's specialized departments to share experiences, provide policy advice and support Vietnam in improving its competitiveness, towards meeting the OECD's global governance standards; support Vietnam in completing and publishing important economic reports to serve as a useful reference for planning Vietnam's long-term development policies.
In particular, the Prime Minister asked the OECD to consider allowing Vietnam to join the OECD soon; create favorable conditions for receiving Vietnamese officials to work at the OECD Secretariat; and said that Vietnam will fully meet the procedures, standards and conditions to join the OECD, integrate more deeply into the world economy and contribute more to the international community for peace, cooperation and development in the world.
Pleased to meet Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Davos; thanking the Prime Minister for his good feelings towards him personally and the OECD, OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann said that Vietnam is a dynamically developing economy, playing an increasingly important role in the Southeast Asian region - the growth pole of the global economy; OECD wishes to strengthen cooperative relations with Vietnam; is ready to support Vietnam in policy advice and issues that Vietnam needs, including joining the OECD.
In addition, OECD Secretary General Cormann also agreed to support Vietnam in participating in the OECD Declaration on International Investment and Multinational Enterprises, strengthen the connection between OECD's specialized committees and Vietnamese ministries and sectors, contributing to promoting and improving the effectiveness of cooperation between Vietnam and OECD in the coming time.
Warmly inviting Mr. Mathias Cormann to attend the 4th Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) Summit scheduled to take place in April 2025 and the 16th UNCTAD Ministerial Conference to take place in October 2025 in Vietnam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam will send a representative to attend the OECD Ministerial Conference in June 2025 at the invitation of the OECD, demonstrating its respect and desire to strengthen cooperation with the OECD./.
