Hackers target company specializing in technology solutions for homeland security issues

Swiss company Xplain was the victim of an attack carried out by a malware group called PLAY.

Swiss authorities are investigating a cyber attack on technology company Xplain, which specializes in technology solutions for homeland security issues and whose clients include federal and regional government agencies.

The cyber attack affected security forces, the military and the Federal Police Office.

“We were the victim of an attack by a malware group called PLAY. They stole some data, forcing us to analyze the situation before taking further measures to protect our customers,” said Andreas Loewinger, CEO of Xplain.

The company, which has offices in both Spain and Germany, reported the incident to the Berne regional police and asked the National Cyber Security Center to assist and investigate.

“We have not contacted PLAY and we will not respond to any ransom demands,” Mr. Loewinge affirmed.

Similar to many other countries, cyber attacks against businesses, government agencies and universities have been on the rise in Switzerland recently. Recently, two major media companies, CH Media and NZZ, fell victim to the PLAY group.
