President Trump extends deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok from US for third time

On June 17, the White House said that US President Donald Trump will this week extend for the third time the deadline for ByteDance (China) - the parent company of short video sharing app TikTok - to sell TikTok's US business to a foreign buyer, allowing the app to continue operating in the US, while negotiations are still ongoing.

In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump has repeatedly emphasized that he “does not want TikTok to be shut down.”

This extension will last for 90 days.

The US government will take its time to ensure ByteDance's divestment deal is completed, allowing Americans to continue using TikTok while ensuring their data is secure.

This is the third extension since President Trump took office in January. He initially signed an executive order delaying the TikTok ban for 75 days, saying it would allow the administration “the opportunity to determine the appropriate course of action with respect to TikTok.”

Last April, the US leader extended ByteDance another 75 days, until June 19, to avoid disrupting the app's operations.

During his first term, President Trump signed an executive order to ban TikTok in the US unless ByteDance sold its US operations to an American company, but the order has not taken effect due to multiple legal challenges.

In April 2024, then-President Joe Biden signed a law giving ByteDance 270 days to sell TikTok, citing national security concerns.

Accordingly, if ByteDance fails to comply, app store operators like Apple and Google will have to remove TikTok from their platforms starting January 19, 2025.

The app was down for hours and resumed operations on January 19, a day before President Trump's second inauguration./.
