(CLO) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that the country is ready to "work under the strong leadership" of Mr. Trump towards a lasting peace , and made initial proposals on ending the conflict.

"Ukraine is ready to sit at the negotiating table as soon as possible to move closer to lasting peace. No one wants this more than the Ukrainian people," President Zelenskyy wrote on social network X on March 4. He stressed that Kiev is ready to cooperate closely with the administration of President Donald Trump to achieve this goal.

Mr Zelenskyy said the first step could be a prisoner swap, along with an immediate ceasefire at sea and in the air. That would mean a halt to missile strikes, long-range drones and air strikes on energy infrastructure – provided Russia reciprocates.

The Ukrainian president’s statements came as the US announced a temporary suspension of military aid to Ukraine, raising concerns about Washington’s support for Kiev. Previously, on February 28, Mr. Zelenskyy and Mr. Trump met at the White House, but the conversation was tense.

The Ukrainian leader left the White House early, while a joint press conference was canceled and the two sides failed to sign a mineral deal as planned. Mr Trump later declared the meeting “meaningful” but insisted that Mr Zelenskyy was “not ready for peace”.

Looking back on the event, Mr. Zelenskyy admitted that the meeting did not go as expected. "It is a pity that things happened that way. But it is time to fix it and move forward. We look forward to continuing cooperation and constructive contacts in the future," he said.

The President of Ukraine affirmed that the country is ready to sign an agreement on minerals and security with the United States "at any time, in any convenient form". He stressed that the signing of this agreement is an important step to ensure national security, and expressed hope that the agreement will bring about practical results.

On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that the US decision to suspend military aid was "the best contribution to the peace process". However, he also noted that the situation was still complicated, with conflicting information about Washington's stance on the conflict.
