During a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on October 11, President Zelenskyy thanked Germany for supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, stressing that "it is important for us that this support does not decrease next year."

He said he would present Chancellor Scholz with a plan to win the war, expressing hope the conflict would end "by next year, 2025 at the latest".

"More than any other country in the world , Ukraine wants this war to end quickly and fairly. The war is destroying our country, taking the lives of our people," Mr. Zelenskyy said.

In response to the request to maintain aid, Mr. Scholz pledged that Germany and its EU allies would send more defense equipment to Ukraine this year, with Germany alone providing 4 billion euros in aid by 2025, and declared that "we will not stop supporting Ukraine."

Mr Scholz said he and the Ukrainian leader agreed on the need to hold a peace conference that would include Russia, but that peace "can only be achieved on the basis of international law".

Mr Zelenskyy then ended his visit with a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Earlier, President Zelenskyy appealed for support during a two-day tour of European capitals, including London, Paris and Rome, as Ukraine faces a third winter in its war with Russia.

Ukraine's leader is seeking fresh military and financial aid from European allies amid fears his support will wane if former US President Donald Trump is re-elected next month.

A defense conference between Ukraine and the West scheduled for October 12 at the US Ramstein air base in western Germany has been postponed after US President Joe Biden canceled a state visit to Germany due to Storm Milton.

Germany is the largest military aid provider to Ukraine after the United States. However, Mr. Scholz refused to send Germany's Taurus long-range missile system because of concerns that tensions between NATO and Russia would escalate.
