North Korea says President Putin may visit Pyongyang soon

Mr Putin also thanked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the invitation to visit, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) citing the office of the North Korean assistant foreign minister.

This will be the Russian leader's first trip to North Korea in more than two decades.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Russia hoped Mr Putin's visit to North Korea, at the invitation of Mr Kim Jong Un, would take place "in the near future", but he said no specific date had yet been agreed.

KCNA said that during Choe's visit, Russia thanked North Korea for its support and solidarity in the military operation in Ukraine.

According to KCNA, the two countries also expressed deep concern over the provocative actions of the US and its allies against the sovereignty of North Korea, and agreed to cooperate to resolve the regional situation.

The statement added that cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow would be in line with the spirit of the United Nations Charter and other international laws.

The growing relationship between Russia and North Korea in recent years has worried Washington and its allies.
