In just 24 hours, nearly 700 migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean were rescued and brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Among them were 10 boats with 430 people, mainly from Pakistan, Syria, Egypt, Ghana, Ethiopia and Eritrea, trying to reach Italy on May 6 and 247 people on May 5.

The new rescues come after a new wave of migrants, with nearly 3,000 people attempting to reach Italy in 48 hours in Lampedusa alone.

The island's reception center is currently operating at three times capacity, despite recent efforts to ease the overcrowding.

The Italian Interior Ministry said that in the first four months of this year, the number of migrants arriving in the country was four times higher than the same period last year, reaching 40,856 people compared to 10,188 people.
