BBK - By understanding market demand and converting the farming structure to a purple lemon growing model, Mr. Hoang Van Hien's family, Nam Doi Than village, Nong Thuong commune ( Bac Kan city) has an income of several hundred million VND per year.
Taking us to visit the fruit-laden lemon garden, Mr. Hien shared about his chance to grow lemon trees: “I initially started my business from selling apricots. When I saw the economic value of apricot trees, I bought land and planted more than 2 hectares of apricot trees. However, around 1996, when apricot prices were low, I switched to apricot processing. The apricot growing area was replaced by 400 seedless persimmon trees. However, because the fruit set rate of seedless persimmons was not high despite the need for a lot of care, in 2016 I experimented with planting 60 purple-flowered lemon trees originating from Da Lat.”

Based on his own experience, Mr. Hien initially did not focus on selling fruit but on nurturing trees for grafting and propagation. From the initial 60 lemon trees, he has now developed 1,000 trees of all ages and has had a stable income for the past 3 years. The average output is 70 - 80 tons of fruit/year, the selling price is from 10,000 VND - 25,000 VND/kg depending on the time. Lemons are mainly consumed in the markets of Ninh Binh , Thai Nguyen, and Bac Kan. Purple-flowered lemon trees bear fruit all year round, so the economic value is high compared to many other crops, and consumption is quite stable.
Thanks to the application of technical advances and production experience, Mr. Hien's family's purple lemon garden has grown green, has a wide canopy and bears abundant fruit. Mr. Hien shared: The outstanding advantages of purple lemon are short harvest time, high productivity and output, and stable selling price. However, this purple lemon tree requires meticulous care, technical knowledge, investment in appropriate fertilizers and pesticides, in the right amount and at the right time, otherwise the tree will have many flowers but low fruit yield.

Lemon trees have stable yields for about ten years. To maintain and increase productivity, at the end of 2022, Mr. Hien decided to graft purple-flower lemons onto 150 pomelo trees that were planted 6 years ago. According to Mr. Hien, pomelo trees have a long lifespan, strong roots, and many branches. When grafted, lemons have many times higher yields, increasing economic value.
Along with developing the purple lemon growing model, Mr. Hien also purchases and processes fresh apricots with an annual output of about 200 - 300 tons of fruit. Thanks to that, in the main season, he creates jobs for more than 30 seasonal workers with an income of nearly ten million VND/month; maintains stable jobs for 5 workers, with an income of 6 - 7 million/person/month.
From the initial effectiveness of the purple lemon tree, Mr. Hien continued to expand the area, replacing old apricot trees with low yields. Mr. Hien's boldness, daring to think and dare to do has brought good results, this is an economic development model worth people's reference and learning./.
