According to AppleInsider , the move is an escalation by the Chinese government after implementing a number of restrictions on iPhone use at government agencies over the past decade.

Chinese government ban on iPhone is similar to US ban on Huawei

Notably, most of the world ’s iPhones are assembled in China, and a large percentage of its components are also manufactured there, so it’s unclear why China would consider the device a security threat, other than the fact that it was designed by a non-Chinese company.

The move is broadly similar to the US government's ban on Huawei technology in the US, and comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on government officials and state-owned enterprises to replace foreign technology with products they consider "more secure."

In 2020, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a press conference that Chinese people would have no reason to keep iPhones or Apple products if a WeChat ban occurred. He raised concerns that American politicians had too much power to suppress non-American businesses.

WeChat was banned by the US for a period from January 2021 before the ban was lifted in June 2021 and replaced by a US Commerce Department initiative to assess apps that could connect to foreign competitors.

About 19% of iPhone revenue comes from China, and the iPhone is also a leader in the high-end segment. However, the ban may not have an outsized impact because government spending on iPhones is only a small part of that 19%, while almost all iPhones sold here are for the public.
