China reduces coffee imports from Vietnam

The Import and Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) cited data from the Chinese Customs Administration, saying that the country's coffee imports in the first 10 months of 2023 reached 113.54 thousand tons, worth 624.79 million USD, up 10.7% in volume and 4.8% in value over the same period last year.

In the first 10 months of 2023, China imported mainly coffee, unroasted or decaffeinated (HS 0901.1100), reaching 101.44 thousand tons, worth over 464 million USD, up 14.6% in volume and 12.3% in value over the same period last year.

The market share of coffee types, unroasted or decaffeinated, accounted for 89.34% of total coffee imports into China in the first 10 months of 2023.

In contrast, China reduced imports of roasted, decaffeinated coffee (HS 0901.2100), down 12.6% in volume and 10.9% in value compared to the same period last year, reaching 11.51 thousand tons, worth approximately 153.2 million USD.

Coffee supply for China is mainly concentrated from markets including: Brazil, Ethiopia, Colombia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia...

In the first 10 months of 2023, China sharply increased coffee imports from Brazil, up 153.6% in volume and 151.1% in value over the same period last year, reaching approximately 39.8 thousand tons, worth 152.88 million USD.

Brazil's coffee share in China's total coffee imports increased from 15.29% in the first 10 months of 2022 to 35.05% in the first 10 months of 2023.

In contrast, China reduced coffee imports from Vietnam in the first 10 months of 2023, down 29.2% in volume and 17.3% in value compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 13.55 thousand tons, worth over 34 million USD.

Vietnam's coffee market share in China's total coffee imports decreased from 18.65% in the first 10 months of 2022 to 11.93% in the first 10 months of 2023.

Beverage consumption trends in China have shifted from tea to coffee in recent years. Although per capita consumption remains low, coffee sales in the Chinese market have increased.

Coffee has the potential to become one of China’s favorite drinks. Therefore, China is considered a potential market for coffee exporting countries, with much room to be exploited in the coming years.
