China to exempt import duties on goods from Afghanistan

Công LuậnCông Luận26/10/2024

(CLO) China will allow Afghanistan to export goods to this country at a 0% tariff rate, according to a statement by the Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan last Thursday.

Although it has not recognized the Taliban government, China has been actively developing economic ties with Afghanistan, especially targeting its rich mineral resources, such as lithium, copper and iron, to ensure supply chain security.

Afghanistan will enjoy zero tariffs on its exports to China, according to Zhao Xing, China’s ambassador to Afghanistan. Last year, Afghanistan exported $64 million worth of goods to China, mostly pine nuts. The Taliban government is looking to expand its export portfolio, especially mineral resources.

Chinese companies already have a presence in Afghanistan, notably Metallurgical Corp of China Ltd, which has held talks with the Taliban to develop a major copper mine. China is also pushing for duty-free imports from less developed countries with diplomatic ties to China.

The Taliban has also expressed interest in participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a project that would connect China’s resource-rich Xinjiang region to Pakistan’s Gwadar port. These moves could not only boost economic cooperation but also open up vast trade and infrastructure development potential for Afghanistan.
