The soccer match between humanoid robots developed by Tsinghua University and China Agricultural University took place in Beijing on Saturday, with the final score being 5-3, with the Tsinghua University robot team winning.
The match was played in a 3 vs 3 format, where the humanoid robots had to operate fully autonomously throughout the match.
“This is the first fully automated AI humanoid robot soccer match in China. The match represents the combination of technological innovation and practical application, showing how robots can be brought to life,” said Dou Jing, CEO of Shangyicheng Culture and Technology Group, the organizer of the soccer match.

However, the tournament organizers also admitted that robots still face many limitations in chasing the ball and avoiding obstacles, leading to collisions and frequent falls during the match.
This is because tracking the movement of an object like a ball on the field is not easy. To solve the problem, the organizers have adopted a more flexible rule that does not penalize some unintentional collisions.
Thanh Hao, a member of the organizing committee of the match, said the robots participating in the match have achieved some breakthroughs, such as automatically coming up with competition strategies entirely using artificial intelligence without human intervention.
Robots also get up by themselves after falling, except in cases where a robot has a problem and cannot continue competing, then it needs to be replaced by another robot.
“We organized the match because we wanted to encourage students to apply their skills and algorithms to robots in real-world situations, and to demonstrate the mobility and stability of humanoid robots.
Football is a sport that requires both independent and coordinated team work. This shows the potential of humanoid robots in participating in sports ,” said Thanh Hao.
The organizers of the match plan to continue holding a tournament for humanoid robots, bringing together the most advanced humanoid robots from around the world to participate.
Sports involving humanoid robots have been a focus of China's development in recent times. In April, a half-marathon between humans and robots took place in Beijing, China.
The first robot completed the 21km run in 2 hours and 40 minutes, far behind the 1 hour and 2 minutes of the first person to reach the finish line.
At the end of May, a martial arts match between two humanoid robots was also held in Hangzhou city, China.
The Chinese government is investing heavily in the humanoid robot field with preferential policies for startups, helping China lead the humanoid robot market.
China's humanoid robot market is expected to reach 870 billion yuan ($120 billion) by 2030, according to the Chinese Institute of Electronics.
