The suspect is on the run, German police said at a press conference. Police added that a special police force had been deployed to urgently search for him.
The attack happened on Friday in a square during a three-day festival marking the 650th anniversary of the founding of the city of Solingen. Police said the attack happened near the stage where a musical act was being performed.

At a press conference, a police spokesman said their "current assessment is that this was a targeted attack". However, when asked by reporters if it was a terrorist attack, the spokesman said: "That's just speculation. I can't say that at this point."
The spokesman added that police were mobilizing all available resources and a large-scale manhunt was underway. “Tonight, all of us in Solingen are in shock, horror and deep sadness,” Solingen Mayor Tim Kurzbach wrote on Facebook.
According to the festival's website, Friday is the start of a three-day "Diversity Festival," featuring music, food , performances and family-friendly entertainment.
However, following the attack, the city of Solingen canceled the celebration altogether. The city announced on Friday evening that events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday had also been canceled.
