Many universities "cross the line" in admissions, inviting candidates to enroll early or pay money to receive tuition support - Illustration photo: AI
No admission yet, why invite admission?
Although the Ministry of Education and Training clearly stipulates that the university admission period for 2025 is from August 13 to August 20 and does not allow schools to require candidates to confirm their admission before August 22, as early as mid-July 2025, some universities have sent "letters of invitation to enroll in regular university programs" to candidates.
In addition, Van Hien University also sent emails to many candidates informing them that they have met the requirements to be admitted to the school, and only need to pay 3 million VND to receive tuition support (60% of tuition for semester 1 and 30% of tuition for semester 2).
This school has just announced "continued support for candidates and parents" 50% of the first semester tuition fee and 10% of the second semester tuition fee. The application period is from August 1 to August 5. To receive support incentives for both semesters and full support for the entire admission fee, candidates only need to complete the payment of the myU membership fee to receive all of the above support".
To receive tuition support, of course candidates must enroll, but without an admission test, how can we determine which candidates are admitted?
At present, candidates are still in the process of paying the admission fee on the common system until 5:00 p.m. on August 5.
The admission system has not yet entered the official admission stage. Therefore, it can be affirmed that the sending of "admission invitation letters" by some universities is not correct in terms of procedure and completely against regulations.
According to the Ministry's admission schedule, from August 13 to 5 p.m. on August 20, universities will upload admission data to the system and conduct admissions for candidates' registered wishes, based on the information provided by candidates. The system will process to determine the highest wish among the wishes for which candidates are eligible to be admitted.
The ministry also requires schools not to ask candidates to confirm admission or enroll before August 22.
According to regulations, only after the virtual filtering system ends and the admission results are officially announced, schools are allowed to send admission notices and admission instructions. Before that time, there are no training facilities to invite admission.
Although some schools cite the reason of "separate admission methods" or "giving early admission opportunities to qualified candidates", they cannot deviate from the time frame and general principles of the Ministry of Education and Training. "Admission invitations" sent before August 22 are invalid.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the evening of August 2, a representative of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training said that after receiving the feedback, the Department of Higher Education reminded schools to review and comply with the admission regulations. At the same time, schools are responsible for explaining to society and responding to the information reflected in the press.
Pressure on candidates
Not only is it a violation of regulations, sending early admission letters can also cause misunderstandings and put pressure on candidates.
While waiting for results, the sudden announcement of admission can easily make candidates think that they have been officially accepted. Candidates may rush to confirm, pay the "place deposit" fee or give up other wishes without careful consideration.
This puts candidates in a passive position, while candidates should have time to make fair and wise choices based on official results.
The race for admission is increasingly competitive, especially in non-public schools or mid-level schools. However, competition does not mean that it is allowed to bend the rules, "cross the line" or violate regulations.
Seriousness in university admissions cannot only be assessed through the quality of later training, but also demonstrated in the way schools behave in the first stage, complying with regulations, providing transparent information and respecting candidates' rights.
If some schools continue to behave in the style of "whoever is faster wins the students", the entire general admission system will lose its consistency and fairness - something that the Ministry of Education and Training is aiming for through new regulations in this year's admission season such as eliminating early admission, converting admission scores according to the percentile method...
This is not the first time that there has been a situation of "breaking the rules" in enrollment. But if there are no timely corrective measures, then a series of technical barriers in enrollment will no longer be meaningful.
Candidates can apply to withdraw and will be refunded.
Previously, in an interview with Tuoi Tre Online about this, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Quan - Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Van Hien University - confirmed that the school had recently sent a notice to candidates who had submitted their applications and met the school's quality assurance threshold.
In addition, the school further informs candidates about the myU membership program in the announcement. This is a program designed to create conditions for members to connect with each other, participate in myU activities as well as receive support for study scholarships...
"Candidates participating or not participating in the membership will not be affected in their admission and official enrollment into Van Hien University or any other university," Mr. Quan affirmed.
According to Mr. Quan, because candidates participating in this myU program pay through the system, the school does not collect directly, so it is currently unclear how many candidates have paid.
However, the school still allows candidates who have paid to participate in the myU program, but change their mind, to submit a withdrawal request.
Mr. Quan said: "When advising candidates about the myU program, the school clearly stated that once they have chosen to study at Van Hien University, they do not need to think about anything else. When you participate in the program, you will be supported with tuition for the first year. However, after participating in myU, if you change your wishes, you can submit a withdrawal request and will be refunded. Currently, we have processed a withdrawal request from a candidate."
