According to Bolatimes , President of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI), Mr. Erick Thohir, has decided not to bring coach Indra Sjafri back to his previous position as technical director, with the intention of finding another replacement from Europe.

Coach Indra Sjafri will no longer be the Technical Director of PSSI after SEA Games 32.

Before the 32nd SEA Games, coach Indra Sjafri, from the position of Technical Director of PSSI, was chosen to lead the Indonesian U.22 team. At that time, coach Shin Tae-yong (who also led the national team) focused on preparing the Indonesian U.20 team to compete in the U.20 World Cup finals. However, the situation changed when Indonesia was stripped of the right to host the U.20 World Cup by FIFA (transferred to Argentina).

The Indonesian U.22 team led by coach Indra Sjafri then competed successfully at the 32nd SEA Games, winning the gold medal in men's football for the first time since 1991. This success also led to changes in PSSI under the new presidency of Mr. Erick Thohir.

"We have discussed and received agreement from coach Indra Sjafri and coach Shin Tae-yong that PSSI needs a new technical director. I am working with many partners from Japan to improve the standards of the national championship, as well as looking for a new technical director from Germany to continue the process of developing and rebuilding Indonesian football," said Mr. Erick Thohir.

With this decision, Mr. Erick Thohir will agree to let coach Indra Sjafri continue to lead and develop the current generation of Indonesian U.22 players for upcoming important tournaments such as the 2024 Asian U.23 qualifiers. Meanwhile, coach Shin Tae-yong will only lead the Indonesian team to prepare for the 2023 Asian Cup taking place in early 2024.

PSSI President Erick Thohir also added: "The 32nd SEA Games gold medal of the Indonesian U.22 team will be a boost for us to further accelerate the process of rebuilding Indonesian football. In addition to the new technical director position, coaches Indra Sjafri and Shin Tae-yong will also be responsible for conveying their experiences and visions to other young coaches to help Indonesian football develop faster."
