At the last minute, Coach Miura decided to bring 25 players to Qatar (instead of 23 as originally planned) in case someone got injured during training sessions in the capital Doha, and 2 friendly matches on January 4 with U.23 Yemen, and on January 7 with U.23 Japan.
Injuries have seriously damaged the U.23 Vietnam squad, with the two most regrettable absences being the two experienced wingers that Mr. Miura likes the most: Ho Ngoc Thang and Vo Huy Toan. Of the 25 players on the trip, 4 are still injured at different levels, the most serious being Huu Dung, but Mr. Miura hopes he will recover in just over a week because Huu Dung is the trump card in the midfield.
However, before departure, many U.23 Vietnam players still showed confidence. Midfielder Do Duy Manh expressed: "The U.23 Asian Cup is really a difficult tournament for us, but the whole team will try our best to get a worthy result. I still believe that if the whole team plays together, we can create a surprise and achieve the goal of reaching the quarterfinals."
