Ukraine says Black Sea is clear of Russian warships

The Ukrainian Navy announced on May 1 that it had no longer detected any Russian warships in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. "In the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, enemy ships have disappeared," Newsweek magazine quoted the announcement as saying.

Since the conflict broke out in February 2022, the Ukrainian military has repeatedly used drones and cruise missiles to attack the Russian Black Sea Fleet, headquartered in Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula. This is said to have forced Russia to move its ships away from the area to ensure safety.

Satellite imagery from October 2023 showed the fleet moving toward the port of Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar Krai region in southern Russia, while some headed toward the port of Feodosia on the eastern tip of the Crimean peninsula.

Images shared last month by open-source researchers show that Russia's Black Sea Fleet has largely abandoned its main naval base in Crimea, according to Newsweek .

Russia has not commented on the above information.

Russia replaces navy commander after much speculation

The Ukrainian Navy's announcement came shortly after Vladimir Rogov, a pro-Russian politician in the Moscow-controlled Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine, said Kyiv had launched an ATACMS ballistic missile from Kherson towards Crimea on April 29.

Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed leader of Crimea, said unexploded small arms fell in the Simferopol region of Crimea after the ATACMS missiles were shot down.

Ukraine has not commented on this information. ATACMS is a ballistic missile with a range of up to 300 km, which was recently supplied to Ukraine by the US. Last year, Washington transferred a shorter-range version of ATACMS to Kyiv.

In March, Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk said Kyiv's goal was to clear the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov of Russian military ships.
