In implementing international commitments, in recent times, Vietnam has made continuous efforts to promote the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation has been specified in national, sectoral, field and local policies.
This was the affirmation of our Ambassador to Thailand Pham Viet Hung on February 25 (local time) at the opening ceremony of the 12th Asia- Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development (APFSD) in Bangkok, Thailand, an annual intergovernmental conference to support monitoring and evaluating progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs at the regional level.
According to a VNA correspondent in Bangkok, with the theme “Promoting sustainable, comprehensive, science-based and evidence-based solutions to the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs so that no one is left behind,” the Forum convenes UN system agencies, member states, international and civil society organizations and other stakeholders to reflect on and provide information for the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2025 in New York, which will assess progress on sustainable development at the global level.
In her opening remarks at the Forum, UN Under-Secretary-General and Secretary-General of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said: “With the technology and finance driving the world today largely coming from the region, the means to achieve sustainable development lies within us. Our commitments must be translated into concrete actions.”
Meanwhile, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung emphasized that the implementation of the SDGs in Vietnam has mobilized active participation and contributions and has become a common task of all relevant parties, and the monitoring and evaluation of implementation is regular and continuous.
Vietnam has achieved certain achievements in implementing the SDGs, which have been highly appreciated by the international community, demonstrated through a number of indicators on: Mother and child care (SDG 3); Improving women's time for unpaid housework and family care (SDG 5); Creating jobs and sustainable GDP growth (SDG 8); Promoting partnerships and mobilizing resources for implementing the SDGs (SDG 17).
However, the Ambassador acknowledged that, like other countries in the world, the implementation of the SDGs in Vietnam still faces many difficulties and challenges in the context of complex developments in the world and the region, and the world continues to face multidimensional crises and challenges such as poverty, conflict, epidemics, environmental pollution, degradation of natural resources and climate change.
Ambassador Pham Viet Hung expressed at this Forum that Vietnam hopes that countries in the region will discuss and realize the "Future Pact" in the region to make practical contributions to global efforts in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
During the four-day Forum from February 25-28, delegates will undertake an in-depth assessment of the region’s progress towards SDGs 3 (good health and well-being); 5 (gender equality); 8 (decent work and economic growth); 14 (life below water) and 17 (partnerships for the Goals). The outcomes of the Regional Forum will feed into the Global High-Level Political Forum in July./.
